Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Karen Mullan has welcomed the success of a benefits uptake campaign but stressed that more can be done to improve the numbers of people receiving their entitlements.
She was commenting after the Department of Communities revealed that the campaign had ensured £21.3 million had been allocated across 4,180 households last year.
Karen Mullan said: “This is welcome news, and we acknowledge the success of this campaign, however it highlights once again that there are still many people in the community not receiving the full benefits they are entitled to. There is an onus on the department to ensure that this is fully explored at first contact with any claimant.”
“It is also imperative that the department work with the independent advice sector and those within the community and voluntary sector to ensure those most in need get access to their entitlements.”
