Sinn Féin MP Elisha McCallion has welcomed confirmation from the Department for Infrastructure that the new section of the A6 between the M22 and Toome opens today.
The Foyle MP said “This is great news for the North West and shows that the construction programme for the A6 is well underway.
“The North West region has waited decades for this road to be upgraded and when Chris Hazzard was the Infrastructure Minister he made it a key priority to ensure that this vital road project was pushed forward.
“The other sections of the A6 are still on target for completion with Toome to Castledawson in 2021 and Dungiven to Drumahoe in 2022. When completed, this road upgrade will reduce journey times between Derry and Belfast which is vital for growing our economy and increasing connectivity.
“This, along with other key infrastructure projects such as the A5 and the new multi million pound Transport Hub at the old Waterside train station, will all enhance this city and district for locals and visitors.”
