Anderson seeks Aberfoyle parking solutionPublished: 9 March, 2010
Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has called on Roads Service to work closely with Aberfoyle residents in order to find a solution to the ongoing parking problems in the area.
"I have been concerned about the parking problems faced by the residents of the University area," Ms. Anderson said.
"The expansion of the university, which is vital for the prosperity and development of Derry, will increase the pressures on local residents in these streets unless Roads Service work with residents to find solutions now. It is vital that we maintain and sustain the good will which currently exists in the Aberfoyle, Duncreggan and Lawrence Hill area for the expansion of the University.
"Roads Service have a responsibility to work with the local residents to develop schemes that will avoid some of the problems being creates by the current state of affairs. The locality has a significant number of older people who have particular mobility and access needs and unregulated parking in the area is creating hardship for many of these people. Recently emergency vehicles have been unable to access Aberfoyle Crescent because of the volume of cars parked there. This is intolerable.
"Local residents have made a strong case for a residents parking scheme in this area and I believe that it is a reasonable solution which should be pursued in the follow-up to the pilot scheme currently being developed in the City Side area.
"I will also be raising this issue directly with the Minister to ask him to initiate an immediate Equality Impact Assessment to ascertain the needs of the local community and which can inform Roads Service as they explore options with residents."
