Sinn Féin Councillor for the greater Shantallow area Tony Hassan has commended those behind the theft and destruction of furniture belonging to a community group in Galliagh twice in the past few weeks.

Councillor Tony Hassan said

"I'm at a loss to explain why this has happened and why people would target a local community group doing invaluable work in the Galliagh area .In the past fortnight thieves have stolen various items of garden furniture from the Galliagh Women's group offices .

It has subsequently emerged that some of the furniture was later destroyed in a fire on a green space a short distance away .It's pointless and shameful that anyone who would even contemplate attacking a property that houses a much valued service for the people of the greater Shantallow and Galliagh areas

"We can't undo what has happened here but we need to give our support to this group and as an elected representative I am putting out an appeal for attacks of this nature to stop .However was behind these attacks they need to release they are only hurting their own community.
