Alley-gates mooted for Lisfannon ParkPublished: 31 August, 2010
Alley-gates could be installed in a bid to combat anti-social behaviour in the Lisfannon Park area of the Bogside, local Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue has said.
Cllr. Logue was speaking after a recent spate of anti-social incidents in the area.
"The back alleys in and around Lisfannon Park have been a magnet for anti-social activity over the summer months," she commented.
"Young people tend to gather in them and there have been a number of incidents involving underage drinking, vandalism and other activity which has caused a great deal of distress, particularly to the many elderly residents who live in this area.
"Closing the alleys off at night is one possible option and similar initiatives have been effective elsewhere in the city. A number of residents have already expressed support for such a move and I am calling on the relevant agencies to consult with the residents in order to gauge the level of support for an alley-gating scheme. I will also be exploring the possibility of having the city wardens patrol the area.
"Sinn Féin will be conducting our own survey of the residents and if there is sufficient support, we will be rigorously pursuing the need to install an alley-gating scheme at Lisfannon Park."
