Appeal to respect confines of local Republican monument

Published: 2 September, 2010

The chairperson of the Derry Republican Graves Association Michael Kinsella has appealed for people to respect the confines of the monument dedicated to the memory of local Republicans in the Bogside and Brandywell ,which overlooks the Lecky Road

His appeal follows complaints that a minority of young people who would congregate in the area at the weekend were using the area around the monument as a toilet and leaving a mess of broken bottles and cans on the walkway leading to it

Michael Kinsella said

"We would like to make an urgent appeal for young people who congregate in the area late at night to respect the confines of the monument. Whilst the vast majority do and there has never been any problems, sadly there is a very, very small number who quite clearly don't.

In last few weeks we have received complaints from several of the families of those honoured on the monument and local residents that young fellas and girls had been using the monument as a toilet and throwing bottles and cans all over the walkways and green area in front of the monument.

The cans and bottles can be cleaned up but people are really annoyed about the total disrespect shown towards the monument which has been fundraised for and built by the republican community of Derry in memory of local people who have sacrificed everything in the cause of Irish Freedom.
