The North of Ireland should not become collateral damage in the Brexit chaos engulfing the Tory cabinet, Sinn Féin MP Elisha McCallion has said.
The Foyle MP was speaking as the British Government Cabinet met for the first time to discuss the post-Brexit relationship with the EU.
She said: “Clear divides are already emerging within the British cabinet with the hard Brexiteers demanding greater separation from the EU.
“This chaotic, disjointed approach has been typical of the British Government’s approach to Brexit ever since the referendum result.
“The people of the North voted against Brexit. We should not be collateral damage in this reckless agenda. Whatever the future relationship between Britain and the EU eventually is, our peace agreements, our rights as European citizens and our membership of the single market and customs unions must be protected.
“That is what Sinn Féin will continue to defend and we urge the Irish Government and the other EU governments to continue defending them also.”
