O’Neill attends launch of presidential voting rights referendum campaign

Sinn Féin Leas Uachtarán Michelle O’Neill MLA attended the VICA (Votes for Irish Citizens Abroad) campaign launch on the forthcoming referendum to extend voting rights to all citizens in the North and the diaspora in presidential elections this November.

The launch took place in the Irish Emigration museum in the Dublin docklands.

Michelle O’Neill said:

“I was delighted to attend the VICA campaign launch today in Dublin.

“There is unified support across the political spectrum in favour of extending presidential voting rights.

“Those that favour the extension of voting rights must now work collectively to win this hugely important referendum.

“Sinn Féin will work with all parties across the island, diaspora organisations and Irish civic society throughout this campaign to achieve that goal.

“Extending the right to vote for the President to Irish citizens in the north is an issue of recognising the democratic rights of our citizenship.

“The President of Ireland represents all of the Irish nation and all Irish citizens equally.

“The campaign to extend the right to vote is very important as the people have an opportunity to hold the State to the values our constitution proclaims.

“All voices – civic society, our diaspora community and political parties – must now organise ourselves in order to persuade and mobilise our family and friends and wider electorate in the south to vote in favour of this modest but very important constitutional reform in extending the right to vote for all Irish citizens this autumn.” Críoch/Ends—
