Raymond McCartney welcomes agreement that ends Palestinian hunger strike

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney today welcomed the agreement between the leadership of the Palestinian prisoners movement, led by Marwan Barghouti, and the Israeli administration at Ahskelon prison after a 41 day hunger strike.

Raymond McCartney  stated:

“Sinn Féin have received direct communication from the Palestinian ‘Commission of Detainees & Ex Detainees’ (CDA) in Ramallah outlining the agreement which was reached between the leadership of the Palestinian hunger strikers, Marwan Barghouti and the Israeli administration.

“Sinn Féin welcomes this agreement and the conclusion of the 41 day hunger strike by over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.

“The agreement deals with many important issues on the treatment of Palestinian prisoners including human right violations, family contact and facilities, and the provision of proper medical care.

“It has also been agreed to continue negotiations on issues that remain unresolved.

“It is clear this is a crucial development for the prisoners and one which we totally support. However, it is equally important that the Israeli administration implements in full the Ahskelon agreement and positively concludes negotiations on the outstanding issues.

“Sinn Féin commends the resolve and commitment of the Palestinian hunger strikers, and their families, and wishes them a speedy return to full health.

“There is a responsibility on the international community to ensure the Israeli administration ends all human right violations in the Middle East.

“Neither the illegal building of Israeli settlements nor the mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners will resolve the conflict. Israel needs to be held to account for their actions.

“Sinn Féin will continue to support the rights of Palestinian prisoners and the legitimate demand of their people to nationhood and freedom based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
