Commenting on the proposals from the Education Authority (EA) to close and merge seven of ten special schools in Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan said:
“It is essential that any proposals are subject to a thorough consultation and that the EA take on board the views of parents and children and ensure that any proposed changes are in the interest of children.”
The party’s education spokesperson continued:
“The EA need should use its authority to alleviate concerns that parents, teachers and pupils have and to ensure the needs of all children with special needs are met.
“Sinn Féin are aware that previous decisions taken by the authority appeared to have caused distress to children with SEN and their parents, this cannot be repeated.
“The EA should also reflect on how they have handled this so far because to spring these proposals on parents and the wider community in the way they have done clearly isn’t fair.”
