Sinn Féin propose campaign to boost local shops over the festive period.

Sinn Féin is to urge Derry City and Strabane District Council to launch a dedicated campaign to boost local traders in the run up to Christmas, the party’s Council Group Leader Sandra Duffy has said.

Councillor Duffy was commenting ahead of this week’s full Council meeting when she will propose the motion to instigate a ‘Shop Derry and Strabane’ campaign over the festive period.

She said: “Council should do all it can to assist our local traders and shops throughout this most difficult period that we are all living through.

“Christmas is a vital time for most traders but this year will be unlike any other due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic so every support we can give them is crucial.

“In particular, my motion will call on Council to explore all opportunities to assist local businesses through advertising, online presence and social media. This should include our shops and our small cottage industries with traders working from their homes.

“We need to commit to supporting our local traders to get them and their families through this difficult time and tomaximise the opportunities that the Christmas period brings so that they can continue to trade in the New Year.”
