Sinn Féin chief whip Carál Ní Chuilín MLA has written to the Speaker Robin Newton today that it is Sinn Féin’s view that he has undermined his impartiality and the integrity of the Speaker’s Office following Monday’s debacle at the Assembly.
Carál Ní Chuilín said:
“The proceedings in the Assembly on Monday were a shambles.
“The DUP ended up in the chamber speaking to themselves.
“This further damaged public confidence and credibility in the political institutions.
“I have written to the Speaker today and told him that he has failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for his decision to allow Arlene Foster to make an oral statement to the house without the agreement of the Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.
“This has not only undermined the joint authority of the Executive Office but also the integrity of the Speaker’s Office.
“It is Sinn Féin’s view that the speaker has set a precedent for the future and in doing so has undermined his impartiality as the Ceann Comhlaire of the Assembly.”
