Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said there is support across Europe for the case for the north to have designated status within the EU.
Martina Anderson said:
“The EU has said there must be an ‘innovative and imaginative’ approach to Brexit. Sinn Féin has put forward a case for the north to secure designated status within the EU. That is our innovative and imaginative approach.
“We have been building support for our case for designated status across Ireland and across Europe.
“Over the last two days a task force of MEPs from across Europe have been visiting Ireland at the invitation of my colleague Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy and I.
“They have seen at first hand the hugely negative impact Brexit would have on Ireland, particularly on border counties.
“We met with business, civic, agricultural and elected representatives north and south and engaged with local communities.
“The MEPs clearly acknowledged the need for the north to secure designated special status within the EU.
“The majority of people in the north voted to remain in the EU.
“I would call on people to lobby MEPs and, in particular, the Irish government, to make their voice heard on the British government’s undemocratic Brexit agenda and to demand special status for the north within the EU.”
