Sinn Féin Foyle MLA and chair of the Assembly’s Health committee Maeve McLaughlin hosted a meeting of the Child Poverty Forum this week
She initiated the forum last year following the release of child poverty statistics for Derry.
The Forum has met a number of times in recent months to discuss potential solutions to some of the child poverty problems. This current meeting discussed early intervention for children and their families and the work of the city’s Early Intervention Partnership which has come out of the One Plan as well as the on-going work in the Child Friendly City initiative.
There was further discussion of local delivery of OFMdFM’s Delivering Social Change. To date the Forum has primarily focused on early intervention but in future meetings the scope will widen to look at other ways to address the persistent and complex problem of child poverty.
