Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called on the Irish government to stop ‘heel dragging’ and immediately recognise the State of Palestine.
Martina Anderson said:
“It’s almost five years on from the passing of a Sinn Féin motion – which was agreed unanimously by the Dáil – calling for Ireland to formally recognise the State of Palestine.
“Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza are suffering daily from an illegal military and economic blockade which is enforced upon them.
“The Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Tel Aviv this weekend. By boycotting we can send a powerful message of solidarity to the Palestinians that Ireland is opposed to apartheid.
“The international community has a duty to support the Palestinian people. Ireland must lead the way.
“It’s time for the Irish government to stop heel dragging and live up to it’s Programme for Government commitments by immediately recognising the State of Palestine.”
