UN recommendation of Stop and Search recording mechanism needs implemented – McCartney

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has called on the PSNI to implement a recording mechanism for people stopped and searched in accordance with the UN Human Rights report.

Raymond McCartney stated,PSNI

“The monitoring of stopping and searching of people in the street is an issue Sinn Féin have been pushing for on the Policing Board for some time

“The stopping and searching of people in the street is a contentious issue and does nothing to build community confidence with the PSNI.

“While it is recognised that stopping and searching can be used as a policing tool it also needs to be accountable and controlled.

“We welcome the recommendation in the UN Human Rights Report that the PSNI adopt the mechanism put forward by the Policing Board that a community background of those stopped to be recorded.

“This would allow for scrutiny of all stop and search incidents and protect people from harassment.
