Sinn Féin Foyle MEP Martina Anderson has launched a booklet, ‘Unite for Rights,’ in Derry highlighting the impact
Ms Anderson said;
“As a member of the disability intergroup in the European Parliament, I know the importance of the EU in terms of disability rights.
“I have engaged widely with the disability sector and I know there is deep concern about the British government’s Brexit agenda and their plan to drag us out of the EU against our will.
“In particular, there is a great deal of alarm about Theresa May’s plans to scrap the Human Rights Act.
“The Good Friday Agreement is interwoven with the EU and human rights protections and the British government cannot be allowed to undermine that.
“The Irish government has a role to play too. It is disgraceful that the Irish government has yet to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
“Disability rights campaigners know the value of our EU membership and Sinn Féin wants to continue with that membership by securing designated special status for the north within the EU.
“Sinn Féin is standing up for people’s rights. That is why we called time on lack of respect and equality in the local political institutions and gave the people the opportunity to have their say.” Ends/Críoch
