Vigil to mark anniversary of end to 1981 Hunger Strikes

1980 hunger striker, Raymond McCartney has called for a large turn-out for the Remembering 81 Committee Vigil to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the ending of the 1981 the hunger strike.

Raymond Mc Cartney said:

“The Remembering 81 Hunger Strike Committee will hold a Vigil at the H-Block Monument in Rossville Street this Sunday 3rd October at 5.30pm.

“Former political prisoner and 1981 hunger striker Pat Sheehan MLA will be the main speaker.

“The Vigil will be attended by representatives of the hunger strikers’ families and will also provide an opportunity for those attending to see the tremendous refurbishment of the H-Block Monument carried out by the Commemoration Committee. 

“Twenty-two runners representing the 22 Hunger Strikers who gave their lives down through the decades, will conclude their second run on Sunday to coincide with the start of the Vigil. 

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the runners for their exceptional fundraising efforts to facilitate the extensive refurbishment of the Monument.” CRÍOCH/ENDS
