Villiers should reconsider position on prisoners kept in isolation – McCartney

Sinn Féin MLAs Raymond McCartney and Jennifer McCann met with the British Secretary of State, Theresa Villiers at Stormont House this morning to discuss the situation of a number of dissident prisoners being held in isolation at Maghberry Prison.

Following the meeting Justice Committee vice-Chair, Raymond McCartney said:

“Myself and Jennifer McCann made Sinn Féin’s position concerning these prisoners crystal clear to the British Secretary of State.

“Prisoners at all times must be treated with dignity and respect. Holding these prisoners in isolation does not fulfil these requirements and Ms Villiers should reconsider her position.

“The wishes of these prisoners to be housed with other prisoners must be respected and they should be moved out of isolation without further delay.”
