“International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade gives us a chance to remember, to reflect on the consequences of the past on our present. We pay tribute to the brave men and women who fought hard to abolish the slave trade and slavery throughout the world and fight for universal human rights.

“It also serves as a chance to raise awareness about the dangers of human trafficking, modern slavery, racism and prejudice which exist today.

“Sinn Féin supports international, including EU wide, co-operation in the area of justice where it is necessary to reduce such crimes.

“We are committed to ensure that all EU and international co-operation in criminal justice matters complies fully with human rights standards, and that any co-operation works to enhance human rights.

“It is imperative that we continue to educate the public, especially young people, about the effects of racism, slavery and the transatlantic slave trade so we do not repeat the mistakes of the past and continue to work to abolish all forms of modern slavery.”
