Sinn Féin spokesperson for Health Councillor Patricia Logue has said a comprehensive workforce strategy is needed now more than ever.
Speaking on the RQIA notification to the Department of Health, she said,
“The serious nursing shortage in hospital and community services in the north must be addressed by the health department in a comprehensive workforce strategy as committed to by former Health Minister Michelle O’Neill.”
“The workforce challenges facing the HSC are not new.”
“However, the RQIA’s formal identification of staffing levels in hospitals and nursing homes as being a problem in almost every area emphasises just how pronounced this problem has become.
“Staff are, and always have been, the HSC’s greatest asset.
“The much needed transformation of our health and social care system can only be achieved with a strong and well supported HSC workforce.
“This means retaining existing staff and attracting new staff to the HSC by ensuring the workforce is fully valued and supported.”
